The municipality of Tubre in Val Monastero - called Taufers im Münstertal in German - with its neighbouring hamlet of Rifair, which lies on the border with the Swiss canton of Graubuenden, is the most westerly municipality in South Tyrol.
Thanks to its altitude (1,250 metres above sea level), even in the height of summer the temperatures are mild - the kind of weather that mountain lovers in particular enjoy. Tubre is the perfect base for both easy and challenging summer hikes; in winter you can plan a holiday on the slopes, as the world famous Ortler group of mountains with its glaciers and the beautiful Stilfserjoch National Park are both nearby.
Without doubt the
ruins of Rotund
and Reichenberg Castles are among the region’s most impressive sights. They were
built in the 12th century by the Bishops of Chur and used as residences. Another
site not to be missed on a holiday in the Vinschgau Valley is the
Benedictine
Convent of St. John, which has been named a UNESCO world cultural heritage site and is located close
to the nearby village of Muestair in Switzerland.
On an evening you can return to Tubre in Val Monastero to your hotel or holiday apartment to relax and unwind
for the next eventful day in western South Tyrol.
